With spring just around the corner, everyone's digging up their outdoor gear and starting to enjoy the outdoors again. If you're like most families, you're probably looking forward to backyard parties and garden activities. But is your yard well-equipped for it?

Outdoor spaces need good design just as much as the indoors. For designers, they present a unique challenge: since you can't control lighting and weather, outdoor design should be both durable and stylish. While it doesn't seem to matter at the start of the season, you'll start noticing the difference once you're seeing it on a regular basis.

The first thing you'll have to consider is outdoor flooring. Needless to say, the stylish wood floors you see indoors won't hold up as well in the yard. What you need is a floor that can stand up to the elements and still look stylish. Some of the most popular options are stone, brick, and concrete. It all depends on your budget, the size of your area, and the amount of maintenance you're willing to put into it.

A path leading to the focal point, such as a small table and chairs, can also add a structured look to your garden. You can clear out some of the grass or lay out a different colored tile to create the effect.

You may also want to consider a small shelter for particularly hot or rainy days. A small awning to one side can house a little sitting area, which can be great for entertaining friends or watching the kids. If you have a deck, a retractable awning may be a good choice as you can control just how much of the place it covers. Some of them even come with remote controls, which can be useful if you need some quick shade.

If you plan on hosting outdoor parties, consider making a larger shelter with posts that double as décor bases. That way, you can simply change up the structure whenever you need and adjust the décor according to the occasion. This will also help you control the lighting better, and give you room for artificial lights when you hold evening parties.
